The region of Piottino

In the olden days those who crossed the S. Gotthard pass coming from the north, still had a long way to go before reaching the smooth valleys down south. Just below the Dazio there was yet another difficult obstacle: the dire passage of the Piottino carved into the rock of the narrow gorge by the Ticino river. The historic route, engineered by Canton Uri in 1561, has been restored, offering a fascinating crossing through nature and history, while the green waters of the river shimmer among the rounded gneiss rocks and the postal bus is driving up the modern road, the trains are gaining the heights through two helicoidal tunnels under and above the gorge, and the whisperings of the highway passing through yet new tunnels reach your ears as testimony of the different modern transportation ways.

This historical path takes you to the lovely garden of the Dazio Grande where visitors will find inspiring and relaxing moments.
